The Fuencaliente Salt Pans: A Marvel of Nature and Tradition

Introduction to the Fuencaliente Salt Pans
The Fuencaliente Salt Pans, located in the south of La Palma, are a natural treasure that combines beauty, tradition, and biodiversity. Since their creation in 1967, these salt pans have been a symbol of the familial effort of the Hernández Villalba dynasty, who have kept this artisanal activity alive. This place is renowned not only for its sea salt production but also for its stunning landscape, where the dazzling white of the salt contrasts with the black volcanic lava and the deep blue of the Atlantic Ocean.

Biodiversity and Ecosystem
Declared a Natural Site of Scientific Interest, the salt pans are a haven for numerous migratory birds, including flamingos and various shorebird species. In this unique ecosystem, a small crustacean known as Artemia salina thrives in the hypersaline waters, playing a crucial role in the food cycle of the visiting birds. Moreover, the presence of microorganisms such as Dunaliella salina gives the waters pink and reddish hues.

A Spectacular Setting
The salt pans' landscape is framed by the majestic San Antonio and Teneguía volcanoes, creating a spectacular setting that invites exploration and photography. Two iconic lighthouses mark this landscape: the Old Lighthouse, built in the late 19th century and damaged by the Teneguía volcano eruption in 1971, and the New Lighthouse, inaugurated in 1985. The Old Lighthouse houses a marine museum and an interpretation center, while the New Lighthouse stands out with its red and white striped design.

A Cultural and Gastronomic Experience
Visiting the Fuencaliente Salt Pans is an experience that goes beyond mere observation; it is an opportunity to taste local products at the "El Jardín de la Sal" restaurant, where Canary Islands cuisine merges with the cultural heritage of the place. Undoubtedly, a must-visit destination for those seeking to connect with the nature and history of La Palma.
