Puerto de Santo Domingo: A Journey to the Past

The Puerto de Santo Domingo in Garafía is a historic pier with a fascinating past, located in a natural cove hidden among the cliffs of northern La Palma. This small port was essential for the municipality’s economy throughout much of the 20th century, serving as a strategic point for transporting goods.

Main Features
Frequently used until the mid-20th century for sending and receiving goods
Point of shipment for local products such as:
Charcoal
Meat
Cheeses
Tubers
Grains

Transportation Particularities
The port was preferred for goods transport, avoiding the challenging summit trails. However, passenger transport was very limited due to adverse maritime conditions, characterized by rough seas and strong northeast winds.

Current Location
Today, the Puerto de Santo Domingo is located near Santo Domingo and is part of the Hiscaguán Coast Natural Monument. Visitors can still see the remains of old buildings used as warehouses and the winches that were employed in the past.
A small trail descends the steep coast, allowing visitors to explore this historic and natural corner of Garafía.
