El Tablado: Hiking Among Cliffs
Introduction to El Tablado
El Tablado is a picturesque village located in the north of La Palma, in the municipality of Garafía, a place where time seems to have stopped. With just 41 inhabitants, this small village is nestled between two of the island's largest ravines: Barranco de Los Hombres and Barranco de Fagundo, offering spectacular views of the northern coastline of La Palma.
Protected Landscape Characteristics
El Tablado is part of the El Tablado Protected Landscape, an area of 221.9 hectares that extends between 220 and 1030 meters in altitude. It is a unique space where human intervention and nature coexist in perfect harmony, characterized by:
Forest communities of laurisilva and fayal-brezal
Intense terracing with garden crops and fruit trees
Presence of banana plant areas
Livestock farming with goat and sheep herds
Notable Fauna and Flora
The area is home to species of great interest, especially birds:
Laurisilva pigeon "turque" (Columba bollii)
"Rabiche" pigeon (Columba junoniae)
Breeding, nesting, and refuge areas for migratory birds
History and Demographics
In the past, El Tablado was a prosperous settlement with nearly 400 inhabitants, mainly dedicated to agriculture and forestry. Isolation and socio-economic changes in the 20th century led to significant emigration, reducing its population to just over 40 residents today.
Most Popular Trail: GR-130
One of the most popular trails crossing El Tablado is the GR-130, known as the Camino Real. This long route connects El Tablado with Santo Domingo de Garafía and offers an authentic experience, crossing traditional rural landscapes. The route includes well-preserved centuries-old paths with panoramic views of the natural surroundings. The total distance is approximately 9 kilometers, with a moderate elevation gain, making it an enjoyable hike without being too demanding.
